Council defers purchase of arena deck
Posted Feb 16, 2012 By Kate EversonEMC News -Quinte West - Council has deferred the purchase of an ice deck for Trenton arena in the amount of $10,000.
It has approved up to $700,000 for the building of an additional change room and repairs to the arena.
"Right now there are four change rooms at Ice Pad Two
and a trailer," said David Clazie, director of Corporate and Financial Services. He said adding more change rooms and one accessible washroom will make the facility more user-friendly.
Jim Harrison noted that the girls were using an old school portable at the site. Danny Young, facilities manager, confirmed that the
girls would use that when the others were full.
Young noted the cost of portable flooring had come in higher than expected. Don Kuntze suggested they just rent the flooring if it was necessary.
"We have no problems with the flooring," Young added. "It is the Home Show that is the problem."
The flooring had been approved by the Corporate and Financial Services Committee to be placed over indoor ice as a temporary conversion of a rink for multi-use activities. Young had said this would enable them to schedule more events at the end of the hockey season. The ice decks have a specially engineered, non-stick
coating that make them exceptionally clean and easy to remove from the ice. It also reduces energy consumption by providing thermal insulation, cutting heating costs.
The Trenton Home Show is scheduled for April 12 to 15. The Trenton Golden Hawks play-off schedule ends on April 10.
David Clazie said there will be no financial impact to the city in 2012 for the construction of new change rooms and accessible washroom at the Trenton arena since the financing costs won't come into effect until 2013. The project will be ready for the 2013/2014 hockey season and possibly sooner.
