EMC Sports - As anyone who has ever done it can attest, fund raising can be a challenging business. So when Trenton Christian School wanted to raise some money to support its Grade 8 class athletic program, principal Al Bron and Trenton Curling Club member Lynette Pennings organized a fun spiel. Ten teams consisting of parents, friends, alumni and acquaintances of the school contributed an entrance fee to compete in last Saturday's event. Teams competed in a four-end games round-robin format, with the A final being a complete eight-end game.

Winners of the Trenton Christian School fund raiser Fun Spiel, the Bellevue Rink Rats, are from left to right lead Ian Pond, vice Joan Crawford, skip Dave Crawford, and second Tim Hoornweg.
Principal Bron explained that funds raised would be used to introduce the Grade 8 class to the sport of curling in February, as well as to help pay for a class trip to Ottawa. Novices and more experienced curlers mingled on the ice, not to win grand prizes, but to support their children. When the last rock had slid into the rings, an ad hoc team hastily dubbed the Bellevue Rink Rats winners of the trophy. Besides thanking the participants for a successful event, the organizers also thanked Taste of Country for providing the lunch.
In other club news, in the draw for the $50 prize for bringing a new member to the club, the winner was Sandra Harrison. Vince Brennan, who curls in the Tuesday night Men's League, won the $100 new member draw.
And finally, everyone loves a fairy tale. Remember the one about Jack, the beanstalk, and the giant killer? The Trenton Curling Club has its own giant in the team of Jim and Wendy Marshall and Julie and Bill Rickard. For a season and a half, they were undefeated until two jacks in succession slid out of the hack to chop down the winning streak. Congratulations to Eric Gilbert and Neil Harder. As for the giant, they've resumed their winning streak.
