Trash receptacles bear hefty price tag
Posted Feb 2, 2012 By Ray YurkowskiEMC News - Brighton - When last week's municipal council agenda turned to correspondence, a letter from Brighton resident Katelyn Orr expressed some concern about the lack of available garbage containers in the community.
"This problem has led to many people not cleaning up after themselves or their animals," she wrote. "Many people enjoy taking their dogs out but having to walk directly into the heart of town just to dispose of waste is a big deterrent. Help us help keep the town clean."
Orr went on to suggest the containers are needed, not only downtown, but on Prince Edward and Butler Streets as well.
"We are planning on installing a few this year, certainly at locations downtown," said Public Works Director Andrew Drzewiecki, but the problem is cost.
They are all steel, stand-alone models and priced at a whopping $1,100 each.
"In this case the cost of installation in a typical location on the sidewalklabour: anchoring in a concrete sidewalk, protection from dumping household garbage, etc.would be in the range of $300 to $350, if no additional work is required," said Drzewiecki.
