EMC Lifestyles - Quinte West - The 14th annual Triva Challenge was held at 413 Wing Air Force Association for the first time on January 26.

"We have had it at the Legion and the Trenton arena upstairs," said Cheryl Whiteman, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. "This Thursday was available and they donated the facility."

Ten teams (of up to ten each) signed up for the charity tournament with a registration of $20 a person. All proceeds go to the Big Brothers and Sisters.

"The first Quiz Master was former MPP Hugh O'Neil," added Quiz Master Rick Kevan from Rock107.

Kevan also donated his time to the event which included timed trivia questions. Some of the teams were the Golden Hawks, 413 Wing and last year's winner Is That Your Spinal Answer? (a group of chiropractors from Clements Chiropractic) who won again this year.

Kira Hurley, fund development co-ordinator, said it was a great night. All funds help to provide mentors to children in the communities. This includes one-to-one matches, in-school mentoring and group programs. More information is at or at 613-962-3666.

Big Brothers began in 1903 in Cincinnati, Ohio, when a businessman befriended a fatherless boy looking for food in a trashcan. Irvin Westheimer recruited friends to help other boys from one-parent families and by 1909 the first Big Brothers agency was incorporated.

Big Brothers of Canada was chartered in 1964. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hastings Prince Edward Counties started in 1974 in Belleville matching Big and Little Brothers, and in 2004 expanded to include girls. In January, 1999, it expanded to include Prince Edward County, and in 2000 included Centre Hastings and in 2009 assumed the service of Trenton and District.

The geographic area includes all of Prince Edward County, Belleville and Centre Hastings (Madoc, Marmora, Tweed, Stirling) with a total population of 170,000.

This is a non-profit charitable organization with a volunteer board of directors. The executive director is a full-time staff person.
