EMC Lifestyles - Quinte West - Literacy Day was held at Trenton Christian School on Monday, January 30, delayed because of bad weather on Friday.

It started off with a Build a Fire truck! event in the gymnasium open to all grades, and sponsored by Lowes.

"This is our first time at a school," said Lowes representative Carrie Hookey. "We usually go to fund raisers such as Juvenile Diabetes and at the store every second Friday."

She said the children get to keep the fire trucks they make out of the kit, as well as the goggles and aprons.

"They keep everything except the hammers," she said.

Several parents and grandparents showed up to help the children assemble the small fire trucks.

"You have to read the instructions!" Hookey smiled.

Other activities in the afternoon were a book fair, making a book bag and meeting with authors Peggy Collins who writes picture books for children, Peggy Dymond Leavey from Trenton area who has written a series of books, and René Schmidt from Brighton who writes about Canadian disasters such as floods and storms. There was an activity celebrating Robert Munsch stories and another reading with Mayor John Williams sharing his favourite books.

Children's librarians Mrs. Kirby and Miss Hanna from Quinte West Library also came to celebrate reading and books with activities and games.

Literacy activities in the classrooms included games and puzzles based on books the children have read, art work based on illustrations from a book, literary circles where children shared a favourite book, and a teacher read-aloud. The kickoff in the assembly was with guest author Richard Scrimger.
